Green Key Certification

The Green Key award is the hospitality industry’s standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation. This prestigious ecolabel represents a commitment by businesses that their premises adhere to the strict code of environmental regulations as stipulated by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

A Green Key stands for a hotel’s guarantee to its guests that by opting to stay with such a hotel they are helping to make a difference on an environmental level. The high environmental standards expected of these hotels are maintained through rigorous testing and frequent spot-checks.

In Cyprus, the GREEN KEY program is organised by CYMEPA in collaboration with our organisation Together Cyprus, under the auspices if the Commissioner for the Environment.

What do we do?

The Green Key exists first and foremost to raise awareness of environmental and sustainability issues within the tourism industry and aims to create behavioural changes amongst guests, staff and suppliers world-wide.

Add value
Positive environmental credentials are becoming more and more important to travellers when they are trying to decide on a place to stay. The Green Key symbolises a commitment to the environment which is extremely attractive to potential guests.

We put huge focus on informing visitors about the measures being taken by an establishment towards being more environmentally friendly, ensuring such information is readily available to the guests and that the staff operating there are trained in the most environmentally conscious practices.

The Green Key is constantly searching for new and sustainable methods of operation and technology in a bid to reduce the overall use of energy, water and waste.

Green Key Criteria

Establishments awarded with the Green Key certification meet a set of high standard environmental requirements. The Green Key criteria and their explanatory notes are available to all interested parties and can be downloaded below. We have developed criteria and explanatory notes for six Green Key categories (hotels and hostels, campsites and holiday parks, small accommodations, conference centres, restaurants and attractions) covering the same 13 criteria areas.

Green Key categories

Green Key criteria  has been developed for the following categories: hotels and hostels, campsites and holiday parks, small accommodations, conference centres, attractions and restaurants.

Here you can download the criteria and explanatory notes for each of the different categories:

The Green Key criteria and explanatory notes for hotels and hostels have received ‘GSTC-recognition’ status.

Most criteria are imperative and must be in compliance, while other criteria are guideline in that an increasing percentage of guideline criteria must be met depending on the years of involvement in the Green Key programme.

It is possible for the Green Key national programmes to strengthen/add criteria in conjunction with the international criteria.

In case of any questions regarding the Green Key criteria, please contact Green Key International or a Green Key National Operator for more information.
